Two years ago, we probably wouldn't be writing this story. In fact, nobody would be. But dance music has taken Sin City by storm so rapidly that it's simply impossible to ignore.
Last year drew America's largest EDM festival to Las Vegas. And with it came a core of A-list international acts passing through town and calling many of the city's hottest venues home, turning America's Playground into what some called America's Ibiza. As the American palate skews ever toward dance, Las Vegas club life is healthier than ever.
MTV News ventured back to the desert to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Marquee Nightclub and further prove that this EDM mecca is not only thriving but poised to smash 2012.
"I think it's only fitting that we ended the year with two amazing artists [Kaskade and Avicii]," said Jason Strauss, owner and co-founder of Strategic Group, the entity behind Marquee, Tao and LAVO. "To have an explosive partner artist like Tim [Avicii] to be with us is going to be historic for us and really tie in this whole year the way it should be".
Marquee certainly has reason to celebrate. In just one year, it's been able to obtain a power lineup of residencies from the likes of Above & Beyond, ATB, Benny Benassi, Chuckie, Dirty South, Erick Morillo, Kaskade, Markus Schulz and Redfoo. Add Hardwell and a half dozen new DJs to the 2012 lineup, along with cutting-edge sight and sound, and it's clear that Marquee has planted a flag in the upper echelon of the Vegas EDM scene.
"I really like the club feeling of Marquee," Avicii (born Tim Bergling) said prior to his set. "The production is amazing and that kind of creates a really unique vibe from the DJ perspective."
This past weekend, the mega venue started off in high gear with a staggering 12-hour set from Kaskade, followed by an anniversary show from Avicii, who just a couple of years ago, couldn't even buy a lady a drink.
"I had my first gig at Wet Republic about two years ago and they wouldn't even let me into the club," he recalled. "They had two guards escort me to the DJ booth and then straight off because of alcohol and everything."
Avicii and a slew of other influential players have partnered with some of the world's premier venues to bring EDM into the heart of American cool culture.
"It's been big all throughout America, but I think this is where you can really see it because you get the biggest DJs in the world playing here every week," Avicii said. "I don't know any other place that has the same lineups that Vegas does."
"Everyone goes there. People from all kinds, all sorts, they like all kinds of music," Fedde le Grand recently told MTV News. "It's very important that dance music is in Vegas because people from all around come. Especially with dance music, you have to experience it to really get it."
EDM's influence in Vegas has become so prominent that the city has declared an official holiday honoring one of the genre's biggest names. Mayor Carolyn Goodman has issued a proclamation officially declaring January 2, 2012, "deadmau5 Day" in the City of Las Vegas, marking the date deadmau5 launched his exclusive partnership with Wynn Las Vegas.
Do you plan to be in Vegas in 2012? Tell us which EDM artist you'd like to see while in Sin City in the comments below!

'He always wants there to be the soul in there,' Cruz tells MTV News about his 'Without You' collaborator.

Usher is hard at work on his next album. Set to work with fellow hitmaker Taio Cruz, the two already cooked up some magic with their David Guetta anthem "Without You," and it seems they are hoping to recapture that spirit for Usher's follow-up to 2010's Raymond v. Raymond.
"I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the Guetta hit because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is."

britney Spears hosts KIIS FM's Wango Tango 2011 on Saturday

LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center.
The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Derülo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson. Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for the St. Bernard Project. Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011. Spears' Femme Fatale collaborator Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing. "That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her." While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower. "Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it." While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage. "I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything." Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement. "Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup." Were you at Wango Tango? Share your experience in the comments below!

Losing her unborn child at almost 5 months into her pregnancy was heartbreaking for actress and model Kelly Brook and boyfriend Thom Evans, but the British star tells Glamour that part of what has helped the healing process is knowing that she isn't alone.
"I found that women approached me and wanted to talk about things that they'd been through themselves," Brook tells the magazine. "I think they probably take comfort in knowing that even though you seem to have a very blessed life, bad things happen to you and it's not your fault.

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories. "I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."
Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m." "Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?" While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]." Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life." "My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' " Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night." Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy." Share your prom memories in the comments below!

From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year.
Britney Spears and Jason Trawick
The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at awards shows and even got naked together in Britney's "Criminal" video, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason put a ring on it. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing." Who is your top couple of 2011? Vote in our Newsroom poll! Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez
Summing up Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's year into a little blurb isn't that easy. They went to events together, and Bieber lavishly rented the Staples Center just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his pet snake, Johnson, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson
The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. Who could forget the time that K-Stew referred to her not-so-mysterious "English" boyfriend in an interview? We're assuming not R-Pattz.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z
OK, so Beyoncé and Jay-Z have been together for, like, an eternity, but it wasn't until this year that the pair really had everyone buzzing. When Beyoncé stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate pregnancy announcement. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West. Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose
Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with Wiz Khalifa. The couple took the world on their wild relationship ride, from doing interviews together to sparking rumors that they had tied the knot. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another. Did we forget your favorite couple of 2011? Let us know on Facebook!

Back in May, ahead of the release of her Born This Way album, Lady Gaga described her hometown of New York City as her "husband," and now, she's been tapped to help her spouse ring in the New Year in the most traditional of ways: by dropping the ball in Times Square. Yes, according to The New York Post, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has named Gaga as his special guest at the City's annual New Year's Eve celebration, where she'll ceremoniously push a Waterford Crystal button at 11:59 p.m., officially beginning the famed crystal ball's descent over the raucous Times Square crowd. Shortly after the official announcement was made, Gaga took to her Twitter account to express her excitement, writing "I'm so looking forward to ... dropping the Ball with Mayor Bloomberg! What an honor as a New Yorker!" Each year, Bloomberg chooses a guest to drop the ball and help usher in the New Year ... though, to date, Gaga is his most, uh, unique pick: previous honorary button-mashers have included Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Muhammad Ali and Rudy Giuliani. Of course, dropping the Times Square Ball — which this year is bedazzled with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles and carries the theme of "Let There Be Friendship" — isn't Gaga's only New Year's Eve gig. She'll also perform at two NYE celebrations: the 40th annual "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" and, of course, the Japanese program "Kohaku Uta Gassen." MTV will also be throwing a New Year's Eve party of its own: "NYE in NYC 2010," a performance-packed special featuring Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, J. Cole, Jason Derülo and more. It all goes down live on MTV at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday (December 31) from Times Square. Will you be watching the ball drop this New Year's Eve? Let us know in the comments below!

It appears that one of entertainment's most spirited couples -- Katy Perry and Russell Brand -- are heading for divorce. After the two were spotted separately over the holidays -- neither wearing their wedding rings -- rumors of a split reached a fever pitch Thursday.
Now TMZ is reporting that Russell Brand has filed for divorce in Los Angeles citing "irreconcilable differences."
Brand has released a statement, saying, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
The couple, who met at the 2008 VMAs and married in India in 2010, have no children.
Brand recently addressed the breakup rumors with Ellen DeGeneres. "There are always rumors, aren't there? In the end, you have to just not engage with Internet technology, which is difficult because a lot of the nude women websites I quite enjoy," Brand joked. "I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married," he added. "I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."
Perry took to Twitter in November to brush off earlier rumblings. "First I'm pregnant & then I'm divorced. What am I 'All My Children'?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime ...," she tweeted.
As of press time, neither celebrity, both with massive followings, had addressed the court filing on Twitter.

Making for quite the star-studded spectacle, Times Square was the place to be as the New York City locale played host to the annual Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012 festivities on Saturday night (December 31).
In its 40th year, the program was co-hosted by Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest with Jenny McCarthy also helping out with reporting duties while Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson of the Black Eyed Peas hosted the affiliated Los Angeles celebration.
With the scenic backdrop including 22,000 LED lights embedded in Waterford Crystal, attendees and viewers were treated to performances by top acts including Justin Bieber alongside Carlos Santana, as well as Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, The Band Perry, Florence + The Machine, Hot Chella Rae, One Republic and LMFAO.
Talking about putting forth another NYE special, Dick Clark said: "It hardly seems possible that we began telecasting 'New Year's Rockin' Eve' 40 years ago. Armed with just a couple of cameras and a skeleton crew, my wife and I stood atop a Times Square building and watched the thousands of happy celebrants in Times Square. The army of talent we had join us over the years has truly been outstanding, and this year we top it off with an appearance by Lady Gaga. 'New Year's Rockin' Eve 2012' promises to be one of the most exciting ever, and I'm proud to be part of the team."
Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest - who was joined by his lovely actress girlfriend Julianne Hough - told: "Lady Gaga is one of the most exciting and relevant artists of our time, and we're thrilled to have her join 'New Year's Rockin' Eve' this year in Times Square. I'm especially honored to share the stage with the legendary Dick Clark, who is celebrating his 40th year hosting the show, which he created and transformed into one of the most iconic American television programs. We're really thrilled to see how this year's lineup lights up the stage to make it the most memorable show yet."
