Ludacris Taps Usher For Upcoming Spring Album
'I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done,' Luda tells Billboard about his Ludaversal.

Are you ready for another Ludacris album? It's been two years since 'Cris dropped his last album, Battle of the Sexes, and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring.
"I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done," the rapper told Billboard of his upcoming eighth LP, Ludaversal, which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March.
Luda, who dropped his 1.21 Gigawatts mixtape in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. "Usher is one person that I've already worked with," he said. "In terms of other artists, you can say that there's going to be a lot of surprises on here."
The pair already have a few collaborations under their belt. Who can forget Usher's inescapable smash "Yeah!" from his 2004 Confessions album? The two also hooked up on Lil Jon's "Lovers and Friends" in the same year and then again two years ago on Usher's "She Don't Know." As far as what the two have cooked up for Ludaversal, fans will just have to wait and see.
Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001's "Area Codes" and 2004's "Number One Spot") and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006's "Runaway Love" and 2008's "Do the Right Thing"). For Ludaversal, he will get a little personal.
"It's been a minute since I've been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about," he said. "So [the album] is mostly about my personal life, my travels, my experiences, rumors, gossip — you know, everything coming together in one."
What are your expectations for Ludacris' new album? Tell us in the comments!

<P>The past 12 months have seen the release of monster albums from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/drake/artist.jhtml">Drake</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lil_wayne/artist.jhtml">Lil Wayne</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml">Nicki Minaj</a>. But the next 12 are promising to bring even more music from several of those artists, plus new albums from Mumford & Sons, Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Linkin Park, Paramore, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Maroon 5 and Green Day. It's a bumper crop of major albums from some of rock, pop and hip-hop's biggest stars, who are returning from long breaks, hoping to follow up smash debuts or just trying to keep their momentum going. While release dates are always subject to change, here are some of the most anticipated releases of 2012. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717202" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><B>Pop</B>:</big><br> Ironically, the status of new albums from the artists whose next moves everyone is most curious about are the ones most in the air. <B>Rihanna</B> tends to deliver a new album every 12 or 13 months, which means that she <I>may</I> have another disc in stores at the end of next year once the just-released <I>Talk That Talk</I> has run its course. On the other hand, <B>Lady Gaga</B> has already begun talking about her follow-up to this year's <I>Born This Way.</I> <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">Gaga recently told MTV News</a> that she's already started writing songs and "all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place." She didn't give a potential release date, only promising, "I'll put it out when it's done." <B>Katy Perry</B> hasn't publicly spoken about what will come after 2010's smash <I>Teenage Dream,</I> but it's possible she could start work on new material in 2012 as well. We know for sure that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml"><B>Justin Bieber</B></a> is planning to show his more <a href="/news/articles/1675015/justin-bieber-new-album.jhtml">mature side</a> next time around, possibly even incorporating some EDM sounds into the mix. It's been confirmed that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a> hooked up with <a href="/news/articles/1675587/nicki-minaj-madonna-give-me-all-your-love.jhtml">M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj</a> for the single "Gimme All Your Luvin' " from her untitled forthcoming album, which will feature production from <I>Ray of Light</I> producer William Orbit. Other artists who could release fresh material in 2012: <B>No Doubt</B>, <B>Maroon 5</B>, <B>Avril Lavigne</B>, <B>Miley Cyrus</B>, <B>Christina Aguilera</B>, <B>Ke$ha</B> and <a href="/news/articles/1672514/nicole-scherzinger-x-factor-album.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger</a>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:716489" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><B>Hip-Hop</B>:</big><br> Two titans of rap are cueing up fresh tracks for early 2012, with <B>Nicki Minaj</B> likely to get out of the gate first with her sophomore album, <a href="/news/articles/1674880/nicki-minaj-pink-friday-roman-reloaded.jhtml"><I>Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,</I></a> due out on Valentine's Day. After the <a href="/news/articles/1674533/rick-ross-god-forgives-i-dont-delay.jhtml">delay of <I>God Forgives, I Don't</I></a> due to a pair of <a href="/news/articles/1672539/rick-ross-seizure-condition.jhtml">seizures he suffered</a> in October, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/ross__rick__rap_/artist.jhtml">Rick Ross</a> is expected to come back strong as well. The Bawse has taken his convalescent time to work on a new track with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a>. Speaking of Jigga, fans may get a new record from him as well, considering he told MTV News he was cooking up fresh tracks way back when he first played us songs from his Kanye West collaborative album, <I>Watch the Throne.</I> In fact, <a href="/news/articles/1675656/jay-z-kanye-west-album-watch-the-throne.jhtml">Jay-Z said</a> you might get solo albums from both men as well as the second Throne release. Other artists that should have albums hitting stores in 2012: <B>Nas</B>, <B>Frank Ocean</B>, <B>Slaughterhouse</B>, <B>Wiz Khalifa</B>, <B>the G.O.O.D. The title of the follow-up to 2009's <I>21st Century Breakdown</I> hasn't been announced yet, but some of the early songs slated for possible inclusion are "Nuclear Family," "Carpe Diem" and "Sweet 16." <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/u2/artist.jhtml">U2</a> have reportedly been cooking up a number of <a href="/news/articles/1650537/u2-working-with-danger-mouse-on-new-album.jhtml">potential new albums</a>, logging sessions with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/danger_mouse/artist.jhtml">Danger Mouse</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1656457/david-guetta-dishes-on-u2-collaboration.jhtml">working with French producer/DJ David Guetta</a>, RedOne and will.i.am on a disc of dance-oriented tunes. Prog rock revivalists <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/muse_uk_/artist.jhtml">Muse</a> should also have some new material for us, with bassist Chris Wolstenholme promising in a recent interview that the sound on their sixth album will be "radically different" from 2009's <I>The Resistance.</I> We may get something from <B>Linkin Park</B>, who are prepping the follow-up to 2010's <I>A Thousand Suns,</I> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/mumford_and_sons/artist.jhtml">Mumford & Sons</a>. It's been two years since the British folk rock revivalists dropped their still strong-selling debut, <I>Sigh No More,</I> and they began giving fans a taste of some new material in the fall when they unveiled the <a href="/news/articles/1673657/mumford-and-sons-ghost-song.jhtml">majestic song "Ghosts."</a> After a rough year, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/paramore/artist.jhtml ">Paramore</a> have finally put the drama behind them and <a href="/news/articles/1674661/paramore-alternative-press-interview.jhtml">they're super-psyched</a> to record an album free of tension and inter-band awkwardness. So far, they've already unwrapped the <a href="/news/articles/1670415/paramore-renegade-fueled-by-ramen.jhtml">bouncy "Renegade"</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1673859/paramore-hello-cold-world-singles-club.jhtml">"Hello Cold World,"</a> which bode well for their fourth full-length studio album. Other rock acts slated to release new albums: the reunited <B>Soundgarden</B>, <B>Foster the People</B>, <B>Neon Trees</B>, <B>Sleigh Bells</B>, <B>Silversun Pickups</B>, <B>Bruce Springsteen</B> and <B>All-American Rejects</B>. <I>Which 2012 albums are you most excited about? Captain America
Go see Captain America this weekend! Support our Colin!
I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. I would've taken photos to show you, but the invite said to leave phones in the car. But here's a photo of me in my cool Captain America 3D glasses:
(Sit down, stop jumping around, it's an awesome picture, I know. And the quality is amazing. It's not grainy or reddish... it's perfect.) (No, it's not.)
(And you can totally see the Captain America logo on the side of the glasses.) (No, you can't.)
Anyway, Captain America is pulling a strong 71% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now so GO SEE IT! IT'S FANTASTIC!

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/u2/artist.jhtml">U2</a> didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them from raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive <a href="/news/articles/1653264/u2-talk-emotional-360-tour-tease-new-album.jhtml">360 Tour</a> moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as <a href="/news/articles/1643529/u2-reschedule-north-american-tour-dates-for-2011.jhtml">Bono recovered from back surgery</a> — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:600842.id:1653089" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive <a href="/news/articles/1667555/taylor-swifts-speak-now-tour-brings-honky-tonk-to-nj.jhtml"><i>Speak Now</i> jaunt</a> racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary Kenny Chesney came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the <a href="http://www.pollstarpro.com/charts/2011YearEndTop25NorthAmericanTours.pdf" target="_blank">Top 25</a> in North America. British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon. <i>Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? <P>What kind of wedding gift do you give the royal couple who has everything? The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is on Friday (April 29), so MTV News reached out to some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities — from Ke$ha to Adam Lambert. Fortunately, they had some solid ideas! </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:647203" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I haven't met them, so it would be kind of awkward," the "Tik Tok" singer admitted to MTV News. "I might paint them something. Maybe I'll paint them a guitar." Like Ke$ha, other celebs had suggestions that were from the heart, even if they weren't the most practical. "I will go out on a limb and say these two individuals maybe haven't had Uncrustables before in their life. I would get them a strawberry Uncrustable," Mike Posner said about the pastry. David Cook followed up on the all-American food idea. "I feel like they have everything except maybe they probably don't have an Applebee's gift card. I'll go [with an] Applebee's gift card," the "American Idol" alum said. Other stars said they'd gift the British prince and soon-to-be-princess with an item they were personally best known for. "I'd probably buy William some eyeliner," Lambert said. "He could do that, he could rock that look. I think." Ne-Yo was more empathetic, saying he would give gifts that could help shield them from photographers and blend in with everyday people. "Three years' supply of sunglasses. Yeah, put them on. A bunch of baseball caps, throw those on, and try to move around like regular people," the singer said. "I can't imagine what it would be like having to live under that big of a magnifying glass your whole life ... and fake mustaches, that's what I'd give them." Brooke Burke went the more traditional route, saying she would get Will and Kate a journal to record the big event. "I would ask them to really take the time to write down thoughts and phrases and wishes," Burke said. "And not really to lose sight of how they feel about each other now and to really hold on to that feeling." Kathy Griffin had good intentions but the comedian couldn't resist a puke joke. "If I had to get the royal couple a gift, I would get them the Royal Couple Vomit Bag, which someone sent me a photo of," Griffin told us. "So you can actually buy vomit bags with their image on it, and I think that that is an honor and I hope that they see it as such." <i>What would you give to William and Kate? Justin Bieber was enlisted by Ellen DeGeneres to help give back to Whitney Elementary, a Las Vegas school that helps underprivileged children. And in addition to donating $100,000 and $100,000 worth of toys, the always-charitable singer performed for the room full of Beliebers.
Bieber even answered some burning questions about his hair, his favorite color and his rise to fame. But, perhaps it was his response about his lady love, Selena Gomez, that had the room most giggly. "What do me and Selena do on the weekends?" he pondered to the room full of school kids. "We go to the movies. And we kiss," he whispered, later laughing, "No, we don't do that." He answered a number of other of the kids' inquiries in a rather quick-fire round. "Do I miss home? Yes, very much," he said. "Cause I'm always traveling and I'm always away from a lot of my family and friends. So, it can be hard. But, once I get to go home and see my family, it's always a pleasure." Before leaving, he had these words of wisdom for the kids: "Be nice to each other and treat each other with respect and grow up to be people of character." The episode aired Wednesday and when he chatted with the school's principal, Sherrie Gahn, he opened up about his own struggles growing up in Canada. "I'm here to bring a smile to these kids' faces. For me, I grew up and I didn't have a lot. We went to food banks to get food for me and my grandparents. Really, if I didn't have my grandparents to help me and these kids they have you to help them," he said. "And it's really special." What questions do you wish Justin Bieber answered? Céline Dion: Family Fun At Beauty & The Beast
Grammy Award-winning singer Céline Dion and her family - husband René Angélil, 1-year-old twin sons Eddy and Nelson, and 10-year-old son René-Charles - posed for pics at the U.K. premiere of Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast in 3D on Sunday (January 8).
The Canadian singer discussed the impact the title song had on her career. “I think that this song gave me a name,” Dion said. “I had already released my first album in English (Unison). People knew my song Where Does My Heart Beat Now but didn’t know the singer. When I did Beauty and the Beast, people not only knew the song, but also knew who sang it. So I think that Beauty and the Beast put me on the map.”

NEW YORK — After Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed their first baby, daughter Blue Ivy, into the world late Saturday, MTV News took to the streets of Jay's hometown to talk to the power couple's fans. "I'm very excited for Jay-Z and Beyoncé's baby," Becky Bristol told us. "I hope it's really healthy and beautiful."
Another set of new parents, Janese Brown and Randell Ferguson, had some words of wisdom for the twosome. "We have a child also. It's gonna be tough, but I know you guys got it; all that money, you got it," they said. "You know she's going to be in entertainment somehow — actress, music — it's gonna be something big." Even though the baby has already been given the name Blue Ivy (or Ivy Blue, according to other reports), Trevorlyn Gilford and Rocki Skeete had a new suggestion. "Congratulations, Bey and Jayonce — is that her new name? Jayonce?" the ladies laughed. "Sounds like a rock-star baby. We're loving it. That's cute. Shout-out to Brooklyn!" The baby's actual name also got rave reviews from sisters Clara and Lucy Harrison. "All the celebrities usually choose quite odd names for their children, but that's a really cool name. I really like it," they said. "She'll inherit some amazing musical talents." Lisa Warren applauded their slightly eccentric pick for a name. "I have a cousin who's named Indigo, so Blue Ivy sounds pretty cool. I think the kid is going to grow up to be loved," she said. "So hopefully she can do whatever she wants to do." In addition to fan reactions, many of the couple's famous friends and fans took to Twitter to send love and "congrats" to the family. Lady Gaga's Big 2012: A Psychic Weighs In1676843
'This tour is going to be really good for her,' psychic Jesse Bravo says of Gaga's planned 2012 BTW Ball.

As 2012 rolls along, Lady Gaga has already teased she has some big plans ahead. So MTV News decided to look to New York-based psychic Jesse Bravo to see what fate has in store for the pop superstar. Bravo recently rolled up to the MTV News offices and looked into his crystal ball.
"Lady Gaga for 2012, it's going to be sort of a slower year for her because she has her tour, which means she's not putting out a lot of new material," Bravo explained, despite Gaga's tease that she is working on her follow-up to 2011's Born This Way. "So for me, when I sort of looked up around there to see what was happening for her, I saw her sales sort of slow down because of new material. But she's also building up this new momentum for running her base for this tour. This tour is going to be really good for her." Gaga has already thought about the Born This Way Ball, tweeting over the holidays that she was pondering the things she wants to sell on tour. "Designing merch for the tour, when you see it you will die. #deathbyinexpensiveglamour," she wrote. Mother Monster is also famously known for her wild style, which Bravo said won't disappoint in the next 12 months. "I believe her next big outfit is a cross between two things, and I was sort of stuck in between, like, where I should go with this because I saw two outfits, which means they can come in succession," he said. "I don't know which one is going to come first. But I will believe the one that I saw is this outfit, and I can't really describe it, but it's going to have lights embedded in it. So it's going to be pretty bizarre. And then I saw another outfit and it's like a body outfit, one that you spray-paint on, and I don't know if it's a stars-and-stripes theme, but I saw that there were stars and stripes in the right areas." In addition to all the ups in her career, Gaga's personal life will also prosper, according to Bravo, which means that she may get even more serious with her rumored beau and "You and I" co-star, "Vampire Diaries" actor Taylor Kinney.
"Her personal life is going to stay stable for a while. The reason why is that on the outside she shows she's a strong character — and for business she is — but on the inside she's a mush. And so as a result, she needs to have her relationship in place, especially right now when she needs that support on going on something that's so big," he said. "Two years is a long, long time [to tour]. I don't think that relationship is going ... it's not going out." Just how serious might they get? Well, Gaga, believe it or not, is already pondering a family, according to Bravo. (Although she did note in a recent interview that the only family she is focused on is her new music.) "I also feel this need of having children. So I don't know how this is going to play because we know she has a tour and she's not going to stop the tour short to have a child," Bravo predicted. "And I know that work is on her mind, but I know that [her spirit guide] Liberace is telling me about a child. And I know that in the back of her mind, she wants one. I think with her, it's about scheduling ... and I would say we're looking somewhere at 2014-2015. That's going to be her time." What do you think about Jesse Bravo's predictions for Lady Gaga? Nicki Minaj's 'Super Bass' Becomes Christian Anthem
Students at the University of Florida unveil 'Super Grace,' an ode to 'the boys with the true religion.'

When Nicki Minaj first dropped "Super Bass," she probably never thought it'd go on to be her biggest hit ... and we're willing to bet she definitely didn't think it would become an anthem for Christian coupling.
And yet, it has. Thanks to some students at the University of Florida, Nicki's ode to the boys with the booming systems has been re-imagined as "Super Grace," a contemporary commentary "about the single Christian girl's struggle to appreciate the wonderful Christian men in her life."
Written by UF student Raychel Manko, and first performed during a homecoming "Skit Night" for the university's Christian Greek organizations, "Grace" pays homage to "the boys with the true religion ... in love with the Lord and done with sinning." It was apparently such a hit — it won first place at the competition — that Manko and her fellow Gators were inspired to make an accompanying music video. And, oh, what a video it is.
In the clip, Manko dons a bright blue wig (a nod to Nicki's eternally evolving hairstyles), preaches from the pulpit, checks out some like-minded guys whilst praying, spits lines like, "You know I really have a thing for Christ-centered guys/ I mean, sigh, I'm gonna cry" (you can read the full lyrics over on her blog) and, of course, inspires some rather zesty choreographed dance routines.
The video was first uploaded on Christmas and has, to date, racked up just 1,100 views. But in recent days, it's begun to make the rounds on sites like Buzzfeed, which sort of guarantees it's well on its way to viral status. Manko, of course, remains unfazed by it all. In fact, she seems more concerned with meeting those Christian guys: as the "Grace" YouTube page states, "Raychel does not have blue hair in real life, and she looks better without it."

Wondering what gifts will await you on Christmas morning? Don't be surprised if Ol' St. Nick stuffs your stocking with a copy of Michael Bublé's Yuletide LP. The throwback singer sold almost 448,000 copies of his Christmas album this past week while shoppers rushed stores to snag gifts for their loved ones. The sales number was more than enough to once again perch Bublé atop the Billboard albums chart like a partridge in a pear tree and bring him that much closer to a double-platinum plaque, according to SoundScan.
Adele put in work as well, securing the #2 spot on the charts, as another 277,000 music lovers realized they should run out and buy her masterpiece 21, 43 weeks after its release. Justin Bieber's Under the Mistletoe (#3, 171,000), Lady Antebellum's Own the Night (#5, 81,000) and Drake's Take Care (#7, 77,000) all pushed past platinum this week, while the Black Keys' El Camino and Amy Winehouse's posthumous Lioness: Hidden Treasures remained in the top 10 in their second week of release. Nickelback's Here and Now (#6, 80,000), Andrea Bocelli's Concerto: One Night in Central Park (#8, 76,000) and "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery's Clear as Day (#9, 66,000) rounded out the rest of the top 10. Soul vocalist Anthony Hamilton saw his fifth studio album, Back to Love, miss the top 10 in its debut week, landing in the #12 position by selling almost 63,000 copies. Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa's Mac & Devin Go to High School movie soundtrack was the week's second notable debut, but one would have to imagine that the duo expected to land higher than #29. Still, once the accompanying film is actually released in 2012, the album could potentially move up. It'll be interesting to see where veteran rappers Common and Young Jeezy will land next week with their respective albums, which were both released Tuesday.

Van Halen Rock New York City With Intimate Show
The quartet took over NYC's tiny Café Wha? to announce their new album, and picked up the tab.

NEW YORK — There are the traditional ways that bands announce their comeback, and then there's the Van Halen way, in which you take over a hole-in-the-wall New York City club, cram it with every music writer in the biz (and some celebs, too) and practically burn the place to the ground with a hit-packed 70-minute set. Oh, and just to ensure maximum good times, you pick up the bar tab, too. For everybody.
On Thursday night in NYC, VH hyped A Different Kind of Truth — their first album with original frontman David Lee Roth in almost 30 years — and their massive tour that kicks off next month. The fiery, fierce, fantastic show took place at the venerable Café Wha?, the Greenwich Village club that has played host to the likes of Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary. In an apparent nod to the place's folk roots, Roth even strummed an acoustic guitar for a minute, which was about as muted as things got.
From the second they strode onto the tiny stage — Roth in overalls and a newsboy cap, Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen in workman-like blue jeans and T-shirts — it was one massive party. And not just because the booze was free.
Roth joked "Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, everybody!" and then they were off, launching into a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," which was stretched out to allow Roth and Eddie Van Halen to trade vocal shouts and guitar licks. Their classic "Running With the Devil" had the crowd (which included everyone from Jimmy Fallon to Roth's uncle Manny, who owned the Wha? Until 1988) losing their collective minds.
That song wrapped with Roth planting a kiss on bassist (and Eddie's son) Wolfgang's cheek, and sent the dynamic frontman into a lengthy monologue. He regaled the crowd with stories about his time as a New York City EMT and pleaded with the "guys from the press" to introduce him to Lady Gaga. He then fired into back-to-back burners "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" and "Everybody Wants Some."
"The last time I stood onstage this low, we had to have the car back by midnight," Roth said, a comment that highlighted what made the show so special: Not only was it the smallest show VH had played in decades, but it was unquestionably one of the happiest. For a band whose past is so dotted with acrimony, everybody on stage looked like they were having an absolute blast, joking between songs, smiles plastered to their faces. And, yes, that mood was matched by the folks in attendance.
Up next was the new (though technically more than 30-year-old) "She's the Woman," which, in a welcome break from reunited-rock-legend tradition, was actually kind of killer. Following it were colossally surging smashes like "Panama," "Hot for Teacher," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and, of course, the set-closing "Jump," which sent the crowd back out onto the Village streets deliriously happy — and slightly inebriated. It was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of night, and seemingly everyone realized it, especially Van Halen. They looked great and sounded even better, a reminder of their prominence in rock's all-time pantheon and a promise that this new tour is a can't-miss. And boy do they know how to throw a party.
